Electro-funk duo Chromeo just unveiled new track and video “Must’ve Been,” featuring multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer DRAM, and guitarist Jesse Johnson. “Must've Been” is the latest single from Chromeo's highly anticipated fifth studio album “Head Over Heels, set for release June 15.
All of Chromeo’s music videos are dancing-in-your-seat level fun with an element of humor that makes them unforgettable, and the “Must’ve Been” video is no exception.
These Montreal natives and high school best friends, Dave 1 (David Macklovitch), who handles guitars and vocals, and P-Thugg (Patric Gemeyal), who takes care of the synths, rose to prominence with their seminal 2007 release “Fancy Footwork,” heralding the dawn of the ‘80s electro-funk revival.
From the beginning, Chromeo made it clear that they are just having fun with what they love to do. Their style and sound would be based on “artful detachment, earnest songwriting, retro breakdowns, and gleaming plastic beats- not serious intent of aggressive musical regime change.”
Chromeo has been putting a huge amount of effort into this album, recording it at the duo’s Los Angeles studio over the past two years. This album will be the group’s most collaborative yet, featuring vocals from The-Gram, French Montana, Stefflon Don, Amber Mark, and more. The album also features musical contributions from neo-soul legend Raphael Saadiq, 2000’s R&B mastermind Rodney Jerkins, D’Angelo collaborator Pino Palladino, New York’s Onyx Collective, members of Mtume and Toto and more.
“Must’ve Been” sees Chromeo effortlessly moving toward more of a live sound, packed with signature guitars, synth swells and gospel flourishes. This track follows “Juice,” which was released in 2017 and The Guardian called “a jaunty, electro-funk mega-banger.”
The variation of 80s funk that we have been hearing lately is surely glad to have Chromeo on its side. We can’t wait for this funk-packed June album!
