Ann-Marie on Friend-Zoning and Karate

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

Pop vocalist Anne-Marie has been releasing growing female-forward hits since 2016 that inspire and relate to women everywhere, as well as send out a public warning that this girl is no pushover and stands her ground. Anne-Marie gives a new voice to relationship song, singing about sticking to her guns and walking away when a man doesn’t treat her right, and her latest hit with Producer/DJ Marshmello, “FRIENDS,” that goes into the dreaded friend-zone conversation.

Most of us have had some kind of experience with the friend-zone, whether we were unfortunately and embarrassingly put in it or awkwardly set someone else there. The good news is that with Anne-Marie’s “FREINDS,” maybe we can avoid our next friend-zone conversation entirely and just play this song.

Anne-Marie warns in the beginning of the song, “You’re not my lover, more like a brother; I’ve known you since we were like ten. Don’t mess it up…you’re only gonna push me away.” Throughout the song she gets feistier when Marshmello doesn’t listen-a common trait of boys who try to avoid getting friend-zoned. In the playful new music video, just released three weeks ago, Marshmello tries to soften Anne-Marie up with little harmless acts of love, but she is not having it. It gets a little creepy when he shows up for girl’s night, but Anne-Marie’s got it covered.

The pop star’s 2017 hit “Ciao Adios” looks at a relationship from a different angel. One that is a little more unfortunate for Anne-Marie this time, but she still makes it known that she is strong and will not be taken advantage of. When her man isn’t treating her like she’s his number one, she’s not going to sit around and waste her time, as her chorus firmly states “Ciao, adios, I’m done.” But impressively, she’s not bitter. She sings, “you get on with your life, I’ll get on with mine,” and even wishes well for the mystery woman- now there’s a strong women to look up to after a bad relationship! But no judgement, ladies. Not everyone can wave a friendly farewell to an ex as he runs off with another girl.

Even in songs that Anne-Marie is featured in, she upholds her strong feminine image. In Clean Bandit’s catchy hit “Rockabye,” Anne-Marie reminder herself, “I’m better than this, I know my worth…I aint stickin’ ‘round for the rerun.”

Anne-Marie isn’t just a strong female on stage and in her songs- this talented lady is also a former 3 X world karate champion! That’s right, she’s not just winging it in her “Karate” music video, this girl is the real deal!

Fearlessly putting someone in the friend-zone, refusing to be taken advantage of, and tearing it up in worldwide karate matches…it’s hard to get much stronger (and cooler) than that. Anne-Marie gives us a new kind of independent woman to look up to, and even though “FRIENDS” has only been out for a few weeks we already want more!
